Expert Review of Oceania's Vista

An overabundance of space and elevated levels of luxury define the Penthouse Suite experience. Ingenious design and tony furnishings punctuate the space, which is resplendent in rich upholstery, fine leathers and stunning works of art. Measuring 440 square feet, Penthouse Suites feature the added luxuries of a walk-in closet, an oversized bath with dual vanities and of course, a large private veranda overlooking the sea.

The suites and staterooms resemble the kind of accommodations and high-quality design details you would expect to find at a high-end land-based resort. Vista cruise ship review: What to expect on Oceania’s first Allura-class ship

However, in the cruise space, this ship is clearly in the upscale category and not true luxury. The fitness center offers both indoor and outdoor spaces, filled with all your normal workout gear and equipment. You can book a few free fitness classes, like one for stretching and some aerobics classes, but most are for a fee. As mentioned, there are plenty of complimentary dining options on the ship. You’ll never get bored of the same ol’ thing when hunting down your breakfast or dinner, and you might not even feel the need to try any of the extra-fee dining options. Vista also carries a line of nonalcoholic "liquors" to make zero-proof cocktails that taste like real cocktails, not fruit smoothies or juices.

Cabins come in all shapes and sizes, mainly divided into inside (no window), outside (porthole or picture window), balcony (with a private veranda), and suite (the roomiest staterooms, often with larger bathrooms, balconies, or sitting areas). Carnival Vista has all the usual cruise ship attractions – casino, spa and fitness center, shops – but its top-deck attractions are next-level. Passengers booked into Havana cabins (aft on Decks 5 and 6) have exclusive access to the Havana pool and hot tubs overlooking the ship’s wake. If you’re looking for some laughs, the Punchliner Comedy Club at the Limelight Lounge brings aboard several guest comedians per sailing for family-friendly and adult-themed standup shows every night.

What’s not included in a Carnival Vista cruise?

The Serenity Adult-Only Retreat claims the highest real estate on the ship (Deck 15). Its padded loungers, clam shells, and hammocks, not to mention its two hot tubs, are incredibly inviting – and someone’s always nearby to make you a refreshing cocktail. Bathing beauties – and anyone else looking to cool off – can find Carnival’s main pools on the Deck 10 Lido. The Beach Pool is surrounded by bars and food counters and rows upon rows of lounge chairs. Aft of the Lido Marketplace, the Tides Pool and its two hot tubs are close to drinks, pizza, and ice cream.

Deck 11

The "dark and spicy" mocktail tasted like an alcoholic "dark and stormy." Unfortunately, not all bars carry the nonalcoholic cocktails. They're on the menu at the new Aquamar restaurant and Horizons observation lounge, and the folks at Founders can make them, but you have to ask. Oceania Cruises also uses a Vero Water system, providing passengers with reusable bottles; 80 percent of the water consumed on the vessels is produced onboard.

Even on a 10-night cruise, we weren't able to get to everything on Carnival Vista. We tried out the outdoor Twister board, but never got a chance to play mini-golf or outdoor billiards. We went to the 4D Thrill Theater movie theater but never saw an IMAX movie. We saw four Playlist Production shows in the main theater, but skipped the magic show in favor of an evening of comedy.

It's up to each passenger to determine if any of the ports of call require additional visas. The current OLife promotion runs through June 30 and includes round-trip airfare and transfers, plus your choice of four shore excursions, a beverage package or $400 onboard credit per cabin. Starting in July, the line will offer a set of included perks, without the need to choose, but the actual inclusions may change during promotional periods.

The oft-forgotten tweens get their own lounge called Circle C on Deck 6, adjacent to the onboard video arcade. Activities are not as structured for older kids, but counselors are on hand to supervise dance parties and sports competitions. On the Deck 5 Ocean Plaza, Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse is a meat lover’s paradise, with menu items such as sausage, pulled pork butt, and grilled chicken.
